Dedicated servers recommended resources

Dedicated servers recommended resources

Sooner or later, as an affiliate when you're managing many sites, it makes better sense to get a dedicated server. It can save money plus you have a greater degree of control over your web sites. A dedicated server is a single computer on a web-hosting network that is either leased or rented, and it is dedicated to just one customer. The service monitors the computer's hardware, network connectivity, and routing equipment, while the customer generally controls and maintains the server software.

Dedicated servers are usually opted by webmasters who've outgrown typical hosting accounts and who now need a large amount of data space and bandwidth. Also those with mission critical web sites, web hosting companies, or those who have very specific requirements. With a dedicated server the customer can install whatever software he chooses to and there is a greater amount of flexibility. Some hosting companies do insist that you maintain the same kernel, however. Dedicated server clients do not share resources, as those with shared hosting plans do.

Choosing between managed servers and unmanaged servers.

Broadly servers can be divided into managed dedicated servers and unmanaged dedicated servers.

With an unmanaged dedicated server, software upgrades, patches, kernels, security and day to day operations are up to the customer. The network service provider takes care of hardware issues, connectivity issues etc.

Some service providers offer partial management of services, such as network monitoring, software upgrades and other services, but usually leave the general upkeep of the server with the client. An unmanaged dedicated server is best for someone with server management experience.

A Managed Dedicated Server is relatively more proactively monitored and maintained on the part of the service provider. When renting or leasing a managed server, the service provider or host carries out the responsibility of software updates and patches, putting security measures in place, performing hardware replacements, and also monitoring the network and its connection for trouble.

A managed dedication server solution works better for the customer with limited server management experience or limited time in being able to perform the duties necessary to keep a server running and online.

Technical aspects to be considered when choosing a server

When you're choosing a dedicated server you need to consider the operating system, hardware options, disk space and bandwidth.
There are a gamut of options to choose from, in terms of the operating system. There's Linux/ Unix, Windows, FreeBsd and others. You need to be sure that the OS will meet your requirement. For instance if you need MS SQL support, you will need to opt for Windows.

Hardware Options are also something to consider when choosing a dedicated server. You'll need to pick a processor that's up to the task, the amount of memory you wish installed, firewall options, and the size of the hard drive.

A certain amount of bandwidth is generally included when renting or leasing a dedicated server. Once you ascertained how much bandwidth you will require, you can adjust that limit with your service provider. The space you'll be given is generally directly relational to the size of your hard drive. Some hosts also give clients the choice of uplink port speed.
